The Los Cabos municipal sports authority INDEM (Instituto del Deporte del Municipio de Los Cabos) installed 100 stadium lights across three public sports facilities, upgrading nighttime conditions for athletes and recreational users in Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the rural community of Miraflores.

Three Facilities Get Upgraded Lighting

The new lamps went into the Leonardo Gastélum Sports Unit in Cabo San Lucas, the Rodrigo Aragón Ceseña Sports Unit in San José del Cabo, and the baseball stadium in Miraflores, a small agricultural town about 40 minutes northeast of San José del Cabo on Highway 1. All three are large, open-air facilities used for organized league play, training sessions, and community recreation.

INDEM described the fixtures as “stadium type” lamps designed for large outdoor spaces. The installations are part of a broader rehabilitation effort at sports venues across the municipality, which falls under municipal President Christian Agúndez Gómez’s infrastructure modernization plan.

Why Lighting Matters at Public Venues

Evening hours are peak time for organized sports in Los Cabos. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 30°C (86°F) for much of the year, so baseball leagues, soccer matches, and casual exercise sessions tend to start after sunset. Poor lighting at public fields has long been a complaint among local sports associations.

The Leonardo Gastélum Sports Unit is the main public athletic complex in Cabo San Lucas, located off Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas. It hosts basketball courts, soccer fields, and track facilities. The Rodrigo Aragón Ceseña Sports Unit serves a similar role in San José del Cabo, sitting in the town’s center near the municipal market area.

Miraflores, with a population of roughly 3,000, has a strong baseball tradition. Its stadium hosts regional amateur league games and serves as one of the few organized recreation spaces in the delegation.

INDEM said it will continue rehabilitation work at sports venues throughout the municipality, though it did not provide a timeline or budget for the lighting project, according to the Los Cabos municipal government website.
