The Los Cabos municipal government launched “Los Cabos Sostenible,” a weekly sustainability program streamed live every Thursday at 7 p.m. on social media. INDESO (the Los Cabos Sustainable Development Institute) created the series to explain municipal development, environmental policy, and territorial planning directly to residents.

INDESO director general Flavio Olachea Montaño said the program responds to a need for accessible public communication about sustainability, resilience, and balanced development in Los Cabos. Each episode features heads of municipal departments covering topics like water resources, infrastructure, environmental management, and urban growth.

What the program covers

The live broadcasts aim to break down technical subjects for a general audience. Episodes will explain specific projects, policy decisions, and the criteria behind the municipality’s environmental, urban, and social planning. Viewers can watch through the municipality’s social media channels.

Water management is expected to be a recurring topic. Los Cabos has faced growing pressure on its aquifer as the population of the San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas corridor has surged alongside tourism development. OOMSAPAS (the Los Cabos municipal water utility) has struggled to keep pace with demand, and territorial planning decisions directly affect how future water and sewer infrastructure gets built.

Sustainability efforts in context

The program arrives as Los Cabos positions itself more aggressively around sustainability. About 42% of Baja California Sur’s territory holds protected natural area status. The Los Cabos Tourism Board has promoted conservation programs for sea turtles and whale rescue, along with 25 Blue Flag certified beaches across the destination.

Still, rapid hotel and residential construction along the Tourist Corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas has raised concerns about overdevelopment. Residents and environmental groups have pushed for more transparency on zoning decisions and construction permits in sensitive coastal and desert areas.

The “Los Cabos Sostenible” series streams on INDESO’s social media pages each Thursday evening. Episodes are in Spanish, though the visual and policy content may be useful for anyone tracking land use and infrastructure decisions in the municipality, as reported by La Pola Cabcs.
