The Los Cabos Municipal Institute for Development and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (IMDIS) is offering free Mexican Sign Language courses throughout June, with options for beginners and intermediate learners. Registration is now open via WhatsApp at (624) 123-7171.
The program includes two levels, each totaling 30 hours of instruction. Level 1 runs virtually via Zoom from June 2 through June 30, with sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. No prior experience is required.
In-Person Option Available in Cabo San Lucas
Level 2 offers both in-person and virtual formats. The in-person sessions take place at the Cabo San Lucas Inclusion and Development Center on Wednesdays from June 3 through June 24. That option is capped at 40 participants. Virtual Level 2 sessions run on Mondays and Thursdays via Zoom during the same period.
Mexican Sign Language, known by its Spanish acronym LSM (Lengua de Señas Mexicana), is the primary language used by an estimated 300,000 to 700,000 deaf individuals across Mexico, according to government data. It is distinct from American Sign Language (ASL) and uses a different grammar and vocabulary. Learning LSM rather than ASL is essential for anyone communicating with deaf residents in the Los Cabos area.
How to Register
IMDIS has run similar programs in previous months, offering courses at various levels. In October 2025, the institute opened classes for Levels 1 and 4, and in January 2026, it held another round with in-person and online options. Spots fill quickly, particularly for the in-person sessions with their 40-person cap.
To sign up, send a WhatsApp message to (624) 123-7171. Both courses are open to all skill levels and are free of charge. The virtual format makes participation possible from anywhere in the Baja California Sur region, not just the Los Cabos municipality.
