The Los Cabos municipal government is offering free spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats in Cabo San Lucas this week. The three-day clinic runs April 20, 21, and 24 in the Colonia 4 de Marzo neighborhood. Free rabies vaccinations will also be available at each session.
Spots are limited and require pre-registration by phone at (624) 132-1454. Pet owners who missed the April 20 opening day can still call to secure a place on April 21 or 24. The municipal government is urging residents to act quickly, as appointments are expected to fill fast.
What Pet Owners Need to Know
Animals must fast for at least eight hours before their surgery. Female dogs and cats that are pregnant, nursing, or in heat are not eligible for the procedure. Owners should confirm all requirements when they register by phone.
The campaign is part of the municipality’s ongoing effort to control pet overpopulation, reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases like rabies, and lower the number of abandoned animals on Los Cabos streets. Stray dog and cat populations remain a persistent concern across Baja California Sur, and municipal sterilization drives are one of the primary tools local governments use to address the problem.
A Cost-Free Alternative to Private Vets
Private veterinary clinics in the Los Cabos area typically charge between 1,500 and 3,500 pesos (roughly $85 to $200 USD) for a spay or neuter procedure, depending on the animal’s size and sex. Rabies vaccines at private clinics usually cost an additional 300 to 500 pesos ($17 to $28 USD). The municipal clinic eliminates both costs entirely.
Several nonprofit organizations also operate in the region. The Los Cabos Humane Society offers accessible spay and neuter surgeries, while Casa Sheila Animal Welfare in San José del Cabo runs free monthly clinics that sterilize roughly 280 to 300 animals per session. The Baja California Spay Neuter Foundation deploys mobile surgical units across the peninsula as well.
To register for the remaining days of the Los Cabos municipal clinic on April 21 or 24, call (624) 132-1454. The event was first announced on the Los Cabos municipal government website at loscabos.gob.mx.
