The Baja California Sur Health Secretariat will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats across La Paz from April 13 to 17. Seven IMSS Bienestar health centers throughout the city will serve as fixed vaccination stations during the five-day campaign.

Pets must be at least three months old and cannot be pregnant. Owners should bring dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier. No appointment is needed at any of the seven locations.

Mobile Brigades Will Visit Neighborhoods

For residents who cannot reach a fixed station, mobile vaccination brigades will travel through La Paz neighborhoods during the same dates. The brigades are designed to reach pets in areas farther from the health centers, ensuring broader coverage across the city.

BCS health officials said the state has been free of human rabies transmitted by dogs for more than 20 years. The annual vaccination campaign is part of the effort to maintain that record. Rabies remains a concern across Mexico, particularly in areas with large stray dog populations, making routine vaccination a public health priority.

Free Spay and Neuter Services Also Available

In addition to the rabies campaign, the BCS Health Secretariat offers free spay and neuter services on weekdays at a Centro clinic on Calle Independencia in La Paz. These services are available year-round, not just during the vaccination week.

Pet owners in La Paz who adopt strays or have recently moved to the area can use the April 13 to 17 window to get animals current on rabies shots at no cost. Private veterinary clinics in La Paz typically charge between 150 and 300 pesos (roughly $8 to $17 USD) for a rabies vaccine, so the government campaign offers a significant savings.

The announcement was published by the BCS state government through its official website, bcs.gob.mx.
