Baja California state security forces arrested a suspected cartel operative on the night of March 23 in Playas de Tijuana after officers intercepted a Hyundai Elantra carrying weapons and ammunition. The arrest in the Playas de Tijuana delegation took place around 9:09 p.m. during a targeted security operation, according to the SSCBC (Baja California’s state public safety agency).

Officers seized firearms and cartridges from the vehicle, though authorities have not released the suspect’s name or specified which criminal organization the individual allegedly belongs to. The SSCBC confirmed the operation but provided limited details about what prompted it or whether additional suspects are being sought.
Playas de Tijuana sits along the Pacific coast at the westernmost point of the U.S.-Mexico border, just south of Imperial Beach, California. The neighborhood is a mix of residential streets, beachfront condominiums, and restaurants popular with both locals and visitors. The area’s proximity to the border fence, where it meets the ocean, makes it a well-known landmark.
Cartel Activity Across Baja California
The arrest comes during a period of heightened law enforcement focus on organized crime in the Tijuana corridor. In February 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed narcoterrorism charges against René Arzate-García, known as “La Rana,” the alleged Tijuana plaza boss for the Sinaloa Cartel. Federal prosecutors say the Arzate-García brothers have controlled cartel operations across Baja California for roughly 15 years. The DEA offered a $5 million reward for information leading to René Arzate-García’s arrest.
The Sinaloa Cartel was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department in February 2025. Federal officials allege the organization uses paramilitary fighters, armed drones, and grenade launchers to maintain control of drug trafficking routes between Tijuana and Southern California.
Playas de Tijuana has generally been considered one of Tijuana’s calmer neighborhoods, but its coastal location along smuggling corridors means security operations are not uncommon. State and federal forces have maintained a visible presence in the area in recent years as part of broader anti-cartel efforts across the municipality.
Authorities have not announced formal charges against the suspect or indicated whether the arrest is connected to any larger investigation. The case was first reported by Zeta Tijuana.
