A 25-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in the small coastal community of San Bruno, located in the municipality of Mulegé, Baja California Sur. Authorities received a report of gunfire at a residence around 3:30 p.m.
Investigators from the Agencia Estatal de Investigación Criminal (State Criminal Investigation Agency) responded to the scene. They found the victim’s body behind a hardware store in the community. The man was originally from the state of Veracruz.
State Attorney General Opens Investigation
The Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado (PGJE), the state attorney general’s office, has opened a formal investigation into the killing. The victim’s body was transferred to the forensic medical service (SEMEFO) for autopsy. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim by name or announced any suspects.
San Bruno is a small fishing and ranching settlement on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja California Sur peninsula. It sits along the Transpeninsular Highway (Highway 1) roughly between the towns of Santa Rosalía to the north and Loreto to the south. The community is a common waypoint for overlanders and road-trippers driving the length of the peninsula.
Recent Pattern of Gun Violence in Mulegé
The killing adds to a troubling string of gun violence in the Mulegé municipality. In a recent separate incident, another shooting in the area left one man dead and a young girl wounded. Mulegé is the largest municipality in Baja California Sur by area, stretching from Guerrero Negro in the north to just above Loreto. Its population centers are small and spread across vast desert terrain.
While violent crime in rural Baja California Sur remains uncommon compared to border areas, these incidents have drawn attention from state authorities. The PGJE has not indicated whether the two shootings are connected.
Travelers on Highway 1 passing through San Bruno should be aware that the investigation is active. The community itself has few services and no significant tourist infrastructure. Most visitors know it only as a brief stop between Santa Rosalía and Loreto.
