The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) opened its 4th International Cybersecurity Forum on March 26 at its main campus in La Paz. The two-day event brings together high school and university students, academics, and government security officials for panels on cybercrime, digital surveillance, social engineering, and international security standards.
Forum Covers Cyberattacks on Universities and Government
Dr. Andrés Sandoval Bringas, head of the UABCS Computer Systems Department, said that cybersecurity concerns now cut across every academic discipline. He noted that universities and public institutions in Mexico face recurring cyberattacks, making training and capacity-building an urgent priority.
State and municipal security agencies from Baja California Sur participated in the forum alongside the academic presenters. Topics on the agenda included network protection strategies and the growing threat of social engineering, where attackers manipulate people into revealing sensitive data.
Annual Event Has Grown Since 2023 Launch
UABCS launched the cybersecurity forum series in 2023. The third edition took place on May 7 and 8, 2025, also at the La Paz campus. By its fourth year, the forum has expanded its scope to include international security standards and cross-border digital threats.
UABCS, located on Boulevard Forjadores in La Paz, is the largest public university in Baja California Sur. The school serves roughly 8,000 students and has positioned its Computer Systems Department as a regional hub for technology education. La Paz, the state capital, sits about 900 miles south of the U.S. border at the tip of the Baja peninsula.
Cyberattacks on Mexican institutions have increased in recent years. Federal agencies, state governments, and universities across the country have reported data breaches and ransomware incidents. The forum’s focus on training students and officials aims to build a local workforce capable of responding to these threats in Baja California Sur.
The 4th International Cybersecurity Forum runs through March 27 at the UABCS La Paz campus, according to Colectivo Pericú.
