The Los Cabos municipal ecology department recognized individuals, schools, and organizations for their conservation and sustainability work during a World Environment Day ceremony and conference series in the municipality.
Award recipients included a primary school principal honored for environmental education programs and the community network Cada Mano Cuenta, which was recognized for its sustainability initiatives. The ceremony brought together academic institutions, civil organizations, and local government officials focused on the region’s environmental challenges.
Universities and Nonprofits Join the Effort
Several academic institutions participated in the event, including UABCS (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur) and ITES Los Cabos (Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Los Cabos). Civil organizations Clean Up Baja California Sur and Reciclando Cabo also took part. Clean Up BCS is a well-known nonprofit in the state that organizes large-scale coastal cleanup events, drawing thousands of volunteers each year.
The conference series covered topics including circular economy principles and environmental justice. These themes connect to broader pressures facing Los Cabos, where rapid resort and residential development has intensified concerns about waste management, water scarcity, and habitat loss along the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.
Conservation in a Fast-Growing Resort Corridor
Los Cabos, which includes both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, holds 25 Blue Flag beach certifications, more than any other destination in Mexico. About 42% of the municipality’s territory falls within naturally protected areas. Despite those designations, the region’s population and tourism infrastructure have expanded rapidly over the past two decades, putting strain on local ecosystems and municipal services.
Organizations like Reciclando Cabo focus on recycling and waste diversion in a municipality where solid waste management has struggled to keep pace with growth. Cada Mano Cuenta operates as a grassroots network connecting residents to sustainability projects in their communities.
The event was organized by the municipal Dirección de Ecología y Medio Ambiente. World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, is designated by the United Nations to encourage global awareness and action on environmental issues.
